Ontario Geoscientist, Andrea Waldie, P.Geo., FGC, honoured with 2025 Canadian
Professional Geoscientist Award
Ottawa, ON — Geoscientists Canada is pleased to announce that Andrea Waldie, P.Geo.,
FGC has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Canadian Professional Geoscientist
Award, the organization's most prestigious national honour recognizing exceptional service to the geoscience profession in Canada.
The Canadian Professional Geoscientist Award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the advancement and recognition of professional geoscience in Canada through their work as a registered geoscientist. The award is a handcrafted sculpture of labradorite and marble, created by a Canadian geoscientist artist, and is typically presented to a mid-to-late-career professional.
Eligible recipients must have a robust career in professional geoscience, a distinguished
record of voluntary service, and significant contributions to Geoscientists Canada or to one of Canada’s provincial or territorial regulatory bodies.
This year’s recipient, Ms. Andrea Waldie, a graduate of the University of Waterloo, has built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades. She has been widely recognized for her commitment to public protection and regulatory excellence. From her early career as a consulting geologist to her transformational leadership as CEO of Geoscientists Canada (2018–2024), Andrea has been a driving force in shaping professional geoscience across Canada.
As the former Executive Director and Registrar of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (PGO) (2007–2012), Andrea strategically separated regulatory and executive functions to strengthen the organization’s governance and operational focus. She played a pivotal role in the national development of Knowledge Requirements and Competency Assessments that advanced interprovincial mobility and supported internationally trained professionals. Andrea returned to PGO in 2025 as the Interim CEO.
Andrea’s service has extended far beyond formal roles. She has served the geoscience
community through volunteer leadership with the APGO Education Foundation, the Global
Geoscience Professionalism Group, and the International Geological Congress 2028
Foundation. Her work has consistently championed diversity, inclusion, and excellence in
geoscience practice—delivered with diligence and humility.
In the year of her retirement, this award recognizes Andrea Waldie not only for her
professional accomplishments but also for the values she embodies: collaboration,
dedication, and integrity.
The citation for 2025 Canadian Professional Geoscientist Award reads as follows: “ in
recognition for her distinguished leadership and commitment to public protection, whose
contributions through regulatory excellence, inclusive dialogue, and community engagement have advanced the geoscience profession, raised professional standards, and fostered national collaboration—all delivered with dedication, precision, and a sense of humour”.
Nominations for this award are considered annually, although the award is not necessarily
presented each year. Further details on the award criteria and nominations process are
available on the Geoscientists Canada website at www.geoscientistscanada.ca.
Geoscientists Canada is the national organization of Canada’s ten provincial and territorial
