M.C.F. (Eric) and Elsie Kossatz Memorial Scholarship for Applied Mineralogical
Research
This scholarship was created in honour of Eric and Elsie Kossatz, who dedicated their careers to the broad field of applied mineralogy in various capacities. Established by the family of the late Eric and Elsie Kossatz to commemorate their significant contributions to Canada’s mining and mineral industry. Administration of the scholarship has been entrusted to the Mineralogical Association of Canada.
Eric was a distinguished Canadian mining engineer whose career spanned almost four decades. His professional career reflected a rare combination of technical expertise, operational leadership, and a strong commitment to workplace safety. His final position was as Vice-President of INCO Gold. Eric’s legacy was defined by technical rigor, leadership, and a long-term commitment to responsible resource development.
Eric’s wife, Elsie, was also deeply involved in the Canadian mining industry. For 30 years, she was an active member of the Women’s Mining Association of Canada (WAMIC), serving as both Treasurer and President. Both Elsie and Eric strongly believed in the importance of education and in supporting the next generation of professionals in the mining and mineral industry. Elsie also dedicated her time to numerous mining-related charitable initiatives as a volunteer. This scholarship reflects their shared commitment to education and to the continued development of Canada’s mining and mineral sector.

Terms of reference
$5000 total (split as follows: $2500 as a student stipend and $2500 for research; receipts of analytical work are expected to be presented to MAC)
Eligibility
You are eligible to compete for this award if you are: (1) enroled as a 4th year Undergraduate or in an MSc. program at a recognized Canadian university or institute of higher education for excellence in one of the specialties supported by the Mineralogical Association of Canada (Applied mineralogical research), or (2) are a Canadian citizen enroled in one of these programs at an international university.
Evaluation Criteria
Complete applications from eligible candidates will be judged based on:
- their letters of support;
- the quality of their application;
- 1 page proposal on how the project and proposed research fit the broad context of applied mineralogy

Submit the application form and a CV along with a signed letter of support from your supervisor. Include a 1 page proposal, which must explain how the project and proposed research fit the broad context of applied mineralogy (examples: from tailings, environmental, mineral processing
and metallurgy, industrial mineralogy)
Applications and supervisor/referee letters of support may be sent electronically or in the mail, and must be received by October 1, 2026.
Academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be received by October 15th.

A subcommittee of the MAC Council will review all proposals received by October 1st. The MAC Council reserves the right to make no awards.
