Tony Naldrett (1933-2020)

Dear MAC member,

It is with great sadness that I inform members that Dr. Anthony J. (Tony) Naldrett passed away on June 21, in England, at age 86.  Tony was Emeritus University Professor at the University of Toronto, having joined the Department of Geology in 1967.  He was a world-renowned scientist conducting seminal research on magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE deposits.

Among his many contributions, Prof. Naldrett served as Presidents of both the MAC (1982-1983) and the International Mineralogical Association (1998-2002).  With the MAC, he played a critical role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the association, this coming at a time when its potential demise loomed on the horizon.

To honor Prof. Naldrett’s scientific legacy and his numerous contributions to our science, the MAC is pleased to announce that a special issue of The Canadian Mineralogist honoring his many contributions is being planned.  More news will be forthcoming, but please consider making a submission to this very special issue in the near future.

A more comprehensive tribute to Tony will be published in Elements and here on the MAC webpage.

Sincerely,

Andrew Conly
President, Mineralogical Association of Canada
